Sosok Raden Saleh adalah sosok yang benar-benar membuka mata Belanda pada abad 19. Bagaimana tidak, ketika orang-orang Belanda menganggap remeh rakyat Jawa dengan keterbelakangannya, Raden Saleh hadir dengan segudang keunggulan dan mengagetkan orang-orang Belanda.
Sosok yang hidup pada 1811 hingga 1880 ini menghasilkan karya-karya lukis yang bahkan mendunia. Bagaimana Raden Saleh, Seniman berdarah Arab-Jawa ini, mampu ‘mengguncang’ Belanda?
Pertama, Lukisannya yang berjudul “Penangkapan Pangeran Diponegoro”, tahun 1857, menjadi sebuah lukisan yang bernuansa nasionalisme pertama kalinya dalam sejarah nasional. Raden Saleh melukis penangkapan Diponegoro sebagai upaya merespon lukisan Nicolaas Pieneman tentang sosok yang sama. Pieneman memberikan judul “Penyerahan Diri Diponegoro Kepada Letnan Jenderal De Kock,” tahun 1830.
Kehadiran Raden Saleh yang melukiskan Diponegoro itu memberikan nuansa nasionalisme pada seni rupa yang belum pernah ada sebelumnya. Lukisan Raden Saleh memberi kritik kepada Pieneman yang kurang paham atas realita penangkapan yang terjadi, sekaligus menyindir Pieneman yang sangat berpihak Belanda.
Hal ini terlihat pada rincian lukisan Pieneman yang menasbihkan pengikut Diponegoro berpakaian seperti orang Arab. Padahal, para pengikut Diponegoro berpakaian Jawa, hanya Diponegoro yang berpakaian seperti orang Arab.
Lukisan Raden Saleh tentang Diponegoro itu memberikan sudut pandang nasionalisme, berbeda dengan Pieneman yang cenderung pro Belanda. Selain itu, Pieneman juga menempatkan bendera Belanda di tempat “penyerahan diri” Diponegoro, sedangkan Raden Saleh tidak menempatkan bendera.
Dalam gambaran Pieneman, Diponegoro juga digambarkan dengan wajah masam yang mengesankan seperti orang pengecut. Sedangkan, Raden Saleh menggambarkan wajah Diponegoro dengan raut marah yang mengesankan perlawanan terhadap Belanda.
Lukisan ini berdampak besar terhadap seni rupa modern di Indonesia hingga saat ini. Sebab, nuansa nasionalisme yang ditawarkan Raden Saleh memberikan perspektif baru atas pemahaman seni bagi para seniman setelahnya di tanah air.
Kedua, Raden Saleh menjadi sosok pelukis pribumi yang memperoleh penghargaan dari Raja Belanda. Raja Willem II menganugrahkan Bintang Orde van de Eikenkroon kepadanya. Ini merupakan tanda penghargaan kepada Raden Saleh di sebelah kiri dadanya.
Penghargaan lainnya seperti Ksatria Orde Mahkota Prusia (R.K.P.), Commandeur met de ster der Frans Joseph Orde (C.F.J.), dan Ridder van de Witte Valk (R.W.V.).
Setelahnya, Raja Willem III mengangkatnya menjadi pelukis istana. Dalam beragam karyanya, Raden Saleh memang seringkali melukis pemimpin-pemimpin negara, selain melukis tentang alam. Beberapa contoh pemimpin yang dilukis seperti Herman Willem Daendels (1838) Van den Bosch (1836), dan Jean Chretien Baud (1835).
Pada abad itu, belum ada orang pribumi yang memperoleh penghargaan seperti itu. Orang-orang Belanda hanya mengingat Diponegoro sebagai pemberontak besar. Tetapi, Raden Saleh berhasil memperoleh berbagai penghargaan, bahkan dari Raja Belanda, secara terhormat.
Ini yang menjadi momok bagi Belanda jika Raden Saleh yang tinggal di Eropa kembali pulang ke Jawa. Sebab, kehadiran Raden Saleh dikhawatirkan dapat menggelorakan nasionalisme di Hindia Belanda.
Ketiga, Raden Saleh bukan sekadar pelukis, tetapi intelektual besar yang diakui Belanda. Ia adalah ilmuwan dan anggota pertama dari Koninklijk Instituut Voor taal-Land-en Volkenkunde (KITLV).
Selama di Hindia Belanda, Raden Saleh berhasil mengumpulkan 38 manuskrip kuno. Salah satunya, ia menemukan manuskrip Sunda Kuno dari Kerajaan Galuh yang memberi informasi agama dan kehidupan sosial orang Sunda.
Ia juga mengumpulkan benda-benda logam Hindu-Budha yang menjadi bagian dari koleksi Belanda saat ini.
Bahkan, Raden Saleh menjadi sosok yang membuka beasiswa Belanda kepada pribumi sehingga kelak memunculkan gelombang kaum cendekiawan nasionalis dari negeri Kincir Angin itu.
Uniknya, Raden Saleh adalah kehadirannya mampu mengguncang Belanda bukan secara fisik, melainkan secara mental yang kelak memberikan inspirasi bagi nasionalisme tanah air.
