Kisah Koo Eng Hien Terjangkit Flu Spanyol

Nasib Koo Eng Hien memang cukup malang. Sejak belia, pria kelahiran tahun Magelang, tahun 1919, itu sudah kehilangan orang tuanya.

Ia hidup bersama kakaknya, Koo Tjiat Nio dan Koo Eng Giok, serta adiknya di Tempuran, kota kecil Onderafdeling yang berjarak lima kilometer ke arah Purworejo. Mereka mengikuti pamannya yang tinggal tidak jauh dari pasar dan rumah gadai.

Wabah influenza, atau disebut “flu Spanyol”,  menyerang distrik itu pada tahun 1924. Kala itu, Koo Eng Hien telah berumur lima tahun yang tentu belum paham mengenai wabah.

Ketika itulah, masa kanak-kanaknya sedang diliputi rasa senang dan tanpa beban. Ia sering bermain bersama teman-temannya di sekitar pasar yang banyak kerumunan, serta memiliki sanitasi lingkungan yang buruk.

Suatu ketika, sepulang dari pasar, Koo menderita panas tinggi. Setelah didiagnosa, ternyata ia terjangkit wabah flu Spanyol ketika berada di pasar.

Tak lama dari itu, anak belia itu pun tak mampu bertahan dan menghembuskan nafas terakhirnya—yang tiga tahun kemudian disusul kakaknya, Koo Eng Giok, akibat terjangkit wabah pes. Koo Eng Hien dimakamkan di Tempuran.

Kisah tersebut diulas di buku Yang Terlupakan: Pandemi Influenza di Hindia Belanda 1918. Selain Tempuran, wabah flu Spanyol juga menyerang wilayah sekitarnya seperti di Bandongan, Muntilan, Magelang, Semarang, dan sekitarnya.

Beragam respon muncul. Ada yang menganggap orang yang terjangkit lantaran terkena azab, seperti yang terjadi di Semarang.

Di kota itu, terdapat kasus tentang seorang kaya raya yang terjangkit wabah dan meninggal dunia. Masyarakat sekitar menganggapnya sebagai azab lantaran korban adalah orang yang pelit.

Ada pula yang menganggap wabah sebagai takhayul. Masyarakat menggambari rumahnya agar wabah tidak menyerang rumah mereka.

Kendati demikian, upaya rasional tetap ada. Dalam penanggulangan penyakit di Muntilan, diadakan vaksinasi. Tangan orang-orang dileleti obat merah, lalu disuntik selama tiga hari berturut-turut.

Selama wabah flu Spanyol menyerang, banyak orang yang sakit. Banyak juga yang mati. Tetapi, ada juga yang mampu bertahan. Koo Eng Hien hanyalah salah satu dari sekian banyak orang yang kurang beruntung kala itu.
