Ketika Jepang “Membajak” Radio

Ketika Jepang berhasil memukul takluk Pemerintah Kolonial Belanda tanpa syarat pada 1942, pihaknya berupaya untuk menguasai saluran komunikasi demi kepentingan tertentu.

Pemerintah Kolonial Belanda yang tahu bahwa pihaknya akan kalah memerintahkan agar seluruh pemancar siaran radio dibumihanguskan.

Seperti yang terjadi di Solo, para pegawai stasiun radio Solosche Radio Vereniging (SRV) diinstruksikan oleh militer Jepang untuk membumihanguskan segala fasilitas radio. Meskipun, dalam ulasan RRI Surakarta: dari Radio Komunitas Menjadi Radio Publik, pihak SRV tak menghanguskan seluruhnya—lantaran hendak digunakan kembali.

Pemerintah Jepang, tepatnya Departemen Informasi dan Propaganda, Sendenbu, mengontrol seluruh stasiun radio dengan membangun Biro Pengawas Siaran untuk mengawasi radio. Pegawai dari stasiun penyiaran Jepang (NHK) dikirim untuk mengatur delapan biro stasiun lokal, kemudian menyambung seluruh transmisi radio—kelak dimiliki Radio Republik Indonesia (RRI).

Di bawah kontrol pemerintah Jepang, radio menjadi media komunikasi massa yang cukup banyak digunakan, tak seperti ketika era kolonial Belanda yang hanya segelintir orang menikmatinya. Orang-orang Indonesia justru lebih bebas menikmati radio pada masa pendudukan Jepang dibanding masa kolonial Belanda.

Kepentingan Jepang “membajak” radio justru untuk menyebar propaganda ke seluruh penjuru tanah air. Mereka ingin orang-orang Indonesia mendengar pesan-pesan Kaisar Jepang dan musik populer kroncong.

Tapi, menurut buku Media, Culture and Politics in Indonesia, pihak yang menentang Jepang turut memantau informasi perang dunia II secara rahasia. Beberapa intelektual justru memanfaatkan Jepang untuk menyiapkan kemerdekaan. Propaganda Jepang, yang disusupi propaganda Indonesia merdeka, terus digaungkan melalui radio hingga Jepang menyerah pada perang dunia II pada 1945.
