Ketika Empat Anak Miskin Mendirikan The Beatles

Kota Liverpool menjadi awal cerita berdirinya sebuah grup band legendaris sepanjang masa: The Beatles.

Semasa perang dunia kedua, hidup menjadi tidak mudah. Banyak orang yang mengalami kesengsaraan dalam hidup, kemiskinan dan kesulitan. Begitu pula Inggris, meski menjadi negara pemenang perang dunia kedua, negara itu tampak rapuh dalam bidang ekonomi.

Tetapi, Liverpool membuka mata dunia. Di kota itu, ada sesuatu kesitimewaan yang bisa diperoleh di mana banyak kota lain di Inggris tidak bisa dapatkan: musik rock.

Tahun 60-an, muncul empat anak miskin yang mencoba untuk meniti jalan hidupnya di bidang musik—dan tak disangka-sangka mempengaruhi musik dunia kelak.

Paul Mc Cartney hanyalah anak seorang bidan dan penjual katun. Pria kelahiran tahun 1942 itu dan keluarganya memang mencintai musik sehingga niatnya untuk mengembangkan karir di dunia tarik suara menjadi takdir hidupnya.

Ia banyak berdiskusi tentang musik dengan Goerge Harrison, sahabat setahun lebih muda darinya. Goerge memiliki minat yang sama dengan Paul.

Ayah Goerge adalah supir bus, yang juga sesame pencinta musik. Goerge mendengarkan musik dari rekaman milik ayahnya yang berasal dari Amerika Serikat. Ia mengidam-idamkan gitar. Dan ketika ia memperoleh gitar, ia memainkannya  setiap hari.

Richard Starkey, kerap dipanggil Ringo Star, tumbuh di wilayah Liverpool yang miskin. Terlahir tahun 1940, ia seringkali sakit-sakitan. Bahkan, karena sering dibawa ke rumah sakit, ia memainkan drum pertamanya di tempat itu. Tahun 1956, ia memperoleh drum pertamanya—hanya sebuah drum besar!

Hanya John Lennon yang mungkin terlihat berkecukupan. Pria kelahiran tahun 1940 itu dititipkan oleh ibunya di rumah besar milik paman dan bibinya, di lokasi yang cukup layak di Liverpool. Setelah ditinggal ayahnya, ibunya mengajarkan John tentang musik. John pun menyukainya, terutama musik rock and roll. Performa Elvis Presley selalu menjadi ingatan pentingnya dalam bermusik.

Dikutip The Beatles karya Paul Shifton, cerita pendirian The Beatles bermula pada tahun 1957, ketika John Lennon mengenyam Pendidikan di Liverpool College of Art. John membentuk band bernama Black Jack yang kelak bernama The Quarrymen.

Ketika ada acara gereja, Paul Mc Cartney diajak temannya untuk menonton pentas The Quarrymen. Saat melihat John memainkan musik, Paul terkagum-kagum kepadanya. Ia menyatakan ingin bergabung dengan John dalam bandnya.

Paul membawa George, sahabat karibnya, untuk turut bergabung dan memainkan gitar. Personil The Quarrymen akhirnya memasukkan Paul dan Goerge. Tetapi, mereka belum memiliki penabuh drum.

Stu Sutcliffe sempat membantu di permainan bass, Paul sempat menabuh drum ketika pentas. Di tengah kesibukannya, Stu mengusulkan untuk mengganti nama The Quarrymen menjadi The Beetles.

Nama pun berubah. Tapi itu tak cukup, nama The Beetles kemudian berganti lagi menjadi Johnny and the Moondogs, Long John and The Beetles, dan The Silver Beatles. Setelah otak-atik ganti nama, The Beatles menjadi final dalam percaturan ganti nama band.

Ketika sempat berpindah dari Liverpool ke Hamburg, Jerman, band ini benar-benar butuh penabuh drum. Pete Best sempat menjadi drummer di band milik mereka.

Mereka sempat bermain gigih di Hamburg dengan berlatih sekitar enam hingga tujuh jam setiap malam. Seketika kembali ke Liverpool, band ini telah terkenal. Pete kerap kali sakit ketika band mulai banyak manggung. Pete akhirnya digantikan oleh Ringgo Star.

Demikian pula Stu. Setelah memperkenalkan gaya rambut exi kepada rekan band dan membuat mereka menggunakan gaya rambut tersebut, Stu juga memutuskan keluar dari band demi melanjutkan studinya di tanah Jerman. Paul mengambil alih permainan bass dan dikenal sebagai bassist The Beatles hingga kini.
