Radio di Tengah-Tengah Kudeta 1965

Jalan Medan Merdeka, Jakarta Pusat, menjadi saksi bisu dalam pendudukan kantor Radio Republik Indonesia (RRI). Pada 1 Oktober 1965, Pasukan milik Letkol Untung menduduki kantor RRI untuk menggerakkan operasinya.

Di situlah, ucapan “Dewan Jenderal” pertama kalinya muncul untuk “menggantikan” presiden yang sedang sakit.

Tetapi, pihak tentara tak tinggal diam. Setelah Mayor Jenderal Suharto mengambil kendali lagi atas kantor RRI, ia mengumumkan asumsinya sebagai pemimpin atas tentara.

Tahun 1965 adalah tahun bagi Suharto untuk melegitimasikan kekuasaannya. Radio menjadi alat legitimasi kekuasaan itu. Kekecewaan dan ketidakstabilan politik atas kepemimpinan Sukarno—yang telah di ujung tanduk—menyebabkan rakyat memberontak.

Ketika masa-masa kritis 1965 berlangsung, banyak aktivis mengembangkan stasiun radio di rumah-rumah pribadi sebagai bentuk penyampaian ekspresi ketidakpuasan mereka atas pemerintahan. Beberapa radio yang ditengarai terlalu politis kadangkala dilarang kekuasaan Sukarno.

Ratusan radio tidak resmi mengudara dan secara efektif menghancurkan kendali monopoli RRI atas informasi dan interpretasi aliran politik kala itu.

Para mahasiswa lebih tertarik dengan radio-radio tidak resmi. Mereka mencemooh pelarangan lagu-lagu barat di RRI, lalu menyiarkan lagu barat popular yang dilarang, seperti The Beatles dan Rolling Stones, di stasiun radio mereka.

Yang banyak diketahui, Radio Ampera, dikembangkan dua aktivis bersaudara, Soe Hok Gie dan Arief Budiman. Penyiaran dilakukan di rumah Mashuri, seorang tetangga dan kawan politik terpercaya Suharto. Radio Ampera dilindungi pasukan Suharto—dikutip dalam buku Media, Culture, and Politics in Indonesia.

Penyiaran Radio Ampera bahkan sempat unggul atas penyiaran RRI dan membuka kesempatan untuk publik mempertimbangkan berbagai macam isu.
