Enam samurai Jepang melaksanakan eksekusi terhadap delapan orang kaya, pemuka adat Pulau Banda. Mereka memenggal kepala para orang kaya, lalu membelah tubuhnya menjadi empat.
Setelahnya, 36 orang kaya dieksekusi dengan cara yang sama. Mereka semua dibantai di depan anak-istri dan keluarganya.
Semua tewas tanpa suara. Seseorang berkata, “Tuan-tuan, apakah kalian tidak mengenal belas kasihan?”
Dan ternyata, tak ada gunanya.
Para serdadu menancapkan kepala dan bagian tubuh orang-orang Banda yang sudah dipotong di ujung bambu, lalu mempertontonkannya di hadapan publik.
“Kita semua, sebagai yang menyatakan beragama Kristen, dipenuhi rasa kecemasan melihat bagaimana peristiwa ini berakhir, dan kami merasa tidak sejahtera dengan hal ini…”
Begitulah catatan yang ditulis Nicholas van Waert pada eksekusi pimpinan rakyat Banda pada 8 Mei 1621. Setelah semua tewas, jenazah para orang kaya itu dibuang ke sumur tua yang terletak tidak jauh dari Benteng Nassau. Hingga hari ini, sumur itu masih dirawat dengan baik, dikenal sebagai Perigi Rante.

Pada hari itu, terjadi pembantaian para pemuka dan rakyat Banda secara besar-besaran oleh pihak Belanda.
Dengan perkiraan total penduduk sebanyak 15 ribu orang, hanya seribu orang yang berhasil bersembunyi di hutan-hutan, atau juga melarikan diri ke pulau-pulau lain. Sisanya, menghilang atau tidak ditemukan saat melarikan diri.
Dengan demikian, setidaknya ada sekitar 13 ribu penduduk atau 86,6 persen dari total populasi penduduk yang dibantai pihak Belanda.
Belum cukup, tentaraBelanda juga membantai orang-orang Inggris. Dua tahun kemudian, para serdadu VOC membantai para pedagang Inggris.
