Jan Pieterszoon Coen bertekad ke Kepulauan Banda.

Setelah menaklukkan Jakatra (Kini disebut Jakarta) pada akhir 1620, ia langsung melancong ke Kepulauan Banda dengan membawa 19 kapal VOC yang berisikan 1.655 tentara Eropa dan 286 tentara Asia (Vincent C. Loth, “Pioneers and Perkeniers: The Banda Islands in The 17th Century”, Cakalele, Vol. 6, 1995).

Sejumlah 250 garnisun dari Banda memperkuat pasukannya; sekitar 100 pendekar samurai menjadi algojo pemotong kepala; serta 286 orang Jawa dijadikan pengayuh kapal.

“Ini adalah kekuatan terbesar yang dikerahkan Belanda pada waktu itu ke wilayah Maluku, sehingga tidak diragukan lagi keberhasilannya,” tulis Sejarawan Batara Hutagalung dalam Indonesia Tidak Pernah Dijajah.

Coen, bersama para pasukan, akhirnya tiba di Kepulauan Banda pada 27 Februari 1621. Tujuannya: menaklukkan Inggris; membantai orang-orang Banda.

Gubernur Jenderal VOC itu memimpin penyerangan pertama di Pulau Lontor pada 3 Maret 1621.

Setelah wilayah berhasil diduduki, sejumlah orang kaya, para pemuka masyarakat Banda, berbalik ke Coen untuk memberi penawaran kontrak baru sesuai dengan permintaan Belanda.

Sebagai gantinya, para pemimpin penting ditangkap dan diadili. Para samurai Jepang memotong kepala 48 pimpinan di antaranya.

Sejumlah keluarga orang kaya yang terdiri dari 789 orang tua, wanita, dan anak-anak dikirim ke Batavia. Sebagian dari mereka dijadikan budak dan bahkan dikirim sampai ke Ceylon (kini Sri Lanka).

Orang-orang Banda di Pulau Lontor yang tersisa melarikan diri hingga ke gunung-gunung.

Tentara Belanda terus mengepung mereka yang tersisa. Mereka yang tak mau ditangkap akhirnya memilih mati dengan menjatuhkan  dirinya dari tebing atau kelaparan, dibanding menderita disiksa tentaraBelanda.

Hanya sedikit yang mampu melarikan diri. Mereka membuat kapal kecil, lalu kabur pada malam hari ke Pulau Kai, Seramlaut, Kisar, dan pulau-pulau kecil lainnya.

Hanya dalam waktu satu hari, Coen mampu menaklukkan Pulau Banda yang terbesar itu.
