Pada periode awal kolonialisasi, banyak orang keturunan Tionghoa dijadikan tukang dalam pembangunan kota Batavia. Orang-orang Tionghoa juga berprofesi sebagai pedagang dan sebagian lainnya sebagai buruh di pabrik gula.
Perdagangan ekspor impor antara Nusantara dengan Cina daratan yang ramai di Batavia menguatkan ekonomi dan meningkatkan imigrasi orang Tionghoa ke Jawa.
Kedatangan kolonial yang membutuhkan tenaga terampil untuk menopang aktivitas ekonominya mengakibatkan jumlah orang Tionghoa di Batavia meningkat pesat. Sehingga, pada tahun 1740, ada lebih dari 10 ribu orang dengan perhitungan 4.000 jiwa tinggal di dalam tembok kota dan ribuan sisanya lagi tinggal di luar batas kota.
Angke menjadi tempat favorit para pendatang Tionghoa lantaran lokasinya mirip dengan kampung halaman mereka. Wilayah ini memiliki sungai yang cocok untuk aktivitas agraris.
Imigran Tionghoa yang umumnya petani ini biasanya memilih tempat tinggal ataupun tempat kerja yang suasananya mirip atau merujuk ke daerah asalnya.
Di pemukiman Angke, berkembang pula kegiatan ekonomi pedesaan karena selain umumnya para pemukim adalah petani, posisi wilayah ini juga berada di luar tembok kota. Kaum elite Tionghoa yang tinggal didalam kota umumnya adalah pedagang besar, bankir, ataupun birokrat VOC.
